While it might be a local’s best-kept secret, Long Island - and Long Beach - are some of the East Coast’s best surfing destinations. With big waves swelling up from the tropics, and a location that’s just a hop, skip, and a jump from Manhattan, the Allegria Hotel puts you in front of the Atlantic’s biggest barrels. That said, here’s everything you need to know about surfing on Long Beach.
Long Beach and its neighbors are some of the most popular spots to surf on Long Island. They’re also some of the most friendly. While the eastern end of the island is known to be notorious for “localism” and its strict pecking order, Long Beach and company are happy to share the waves. In fact, one of the most popular spots among local surfers in Long Beach is right next to the Allegria Hotel, near the Lincoln Road entrance to the beach.
Long Beach can be surfed year-round. Because of its gentler waves, we recommend summer surfing for beginners and amateurs, and fall and winter for more experienced surfers. However, the end of summer and fall in Long Beach both have the reputation for bringing some of the biggest and best waves of the season, thanks to the hurricanes brewing in the Caribbean.
You don’t have to be a seasoned veteran to surf in Long Beach. At the Allegria Hotel we can hook you up with surfing lessons from one of the East Coast’s most acclaimed schools. Skudin Surf has a tent on the Allegria beach front where you can sign up for private and semi-private lessons, as well as group classes on the weekends.
During spring, fall, and winter, surfing is free of charge in the City of Long Beach. But come summer and a beach pass is required. Luckily, your beach pass is included with your reservation at the Allegria Hotel.
In both summer and winter, you’ll need a wetsuit to surf the Long Beach waves. While you can get away with a short-sleeve suit in the summer, come winter nothing lighter than a 5mm suit will do. Luckily, Skudin Surf rents both wetsuits and boards to Allegria Hotel patrons.
