During the summer, the Long Beach surf can feel as crowded as a NY Subway platform. Surfing novices, visitors and locals are all out to enjoy the beach breaks, which can cause traffic-jam issues. If you’re new to surfing or visiting Long Beach, here are some things to know.
Surfing beaches are clearly marked with yellow flags. Permanent surfing beaches include Lincoln Boulevard to Monroe Boulevard and Maple Boulevard to Pacific Boulevard to the east of the swimming area. Want more specifics? Read more on the city website. Unfortunately, there’s no “one-size fits all” surfboard out there. If you’re new to surfing, you’ll want to sign up for classes so that you have expert advice on surfing and which board best fits your needs based on skill, weight, and the kind of wave you’re seeking. Communicate with the folks at Skudin Surf to sign up for classes and rent equipment. Skudin Surf is located right next to Allegria Hotel.
While paddling to catch a wave, look over your shoulder to the peak and make sure no one else is in position. If someone already is, let it pass. It’s never okay to drop or snake other people’s waves.
It’s hard to be aware of your surroundings during a wipeout, but you can ensure your board doesn’t go too far in someone’s direction by fastening it securely to your ankle with a leash.
If you’re about to surf into someone, make yourself seen by being heard! Showing respect to others will be reciprocated to your advantage.
